The children from our Gifted & Talented sports club were treated to an incredible trip to Epsom College last Friday – something Epsom have never done before. The group were met by Miss Busby and escorted to meet Mr Johnson (Director of Sport) who then toured the group around the school’s amazing facilities.
The first session the children had was with Mr Paul (2018 Commonwealth Games England Hurdles athlete) who led the pupils through a variety of movement exercises aimed at developing running mechanics. After this sweaty session the pupils had time to recover and listen to a talk by Mr Beckett who spoke about the pros and cons of being an elite sportsman. Mr Beckett and Mr Johnson made particular reference to the mental toughness successful athletes need to have to overcome adversity and how ‘all you can do is your best’.
Mr Ahmed then took over the reins and guided the group through a professional power and speed testing session looking at 20m sprints using timing gates and the standing broad jump. Just before lunch the pupils experienced another detailed session with one of Epsom College’s elite coaches: Mr Beckett (Hockey), Mr Seale (Football), Mr Whatling (Rugby) and Mr Shirazi (Cricket).
The children enjoyed a jam-packed day of sport at Epsom College, which they will never forget, and returned to Longacre with a wealth of new knowledge and motivation to achieve.
A huge thank you to Epsom College, Miss Busby, Mr Johnson and the entire Epsom College Sports Department for an inspiring trip.
