The Wider Curriculum

Children leave Longacre happy, with a love of learning, a thirst for knowledge and having discovered something for which they feel genuine passion. We aim to provide as many opportunities as possible to assist children in finding their passion through extra-curricular activities, trips and outings and the wider curriculum.

Performances and Concerts

All children are given the opportunity to perform in concerts and plays during their time in the Prep School. This does not mean that every child is expected to enjoy the limelight; some may find designing scenery, working a lighting and sound desk or being a stage hand preferable and they are encouraged to explore where their interest lies.

At the end of the Michaelmas term all children participate in our festive Carol Service. As well as drama productions, there are music concerts throughout the year. All children have the opportunity to perform in our informal, year group teatime concerts, which are a wonderful way of celebrating all our children’s talents.

All children participate in a class assembly once a year to which parents are invited. These assemblies are held on Thursday mornings and are a collaborative way for every child to perform; to present different ideas, to show the rest of the school what they have been learning or simply to encourage their creativity and self-expression.

Educational Visits

Longacre welcomes a multitude of visitors into school from authors and artists to guest speakers and representatives from local charities.

The children journey out of school once a term on outings designed to further complement the curriculum. Our youngest pupils visit the aquarium and the planetarium whilst our older children visit art galleries in London, historic dockyards and the battlefields in France. Once a year all the children enjoy a whole school outing to the beach at West Wittering, which is a spectacle to behold.

Residential Trips

Residential trips are offered to children in Forms III, IV, V and VI; these are of great benefit to the children and always much enjoyed.

Children begin with the opportunity of spending two nights away with their peer group in the local vicinity. This assists the children in developing their skills of independence in addition to vital bonding with their peer group.

In Form III the children spend two nights at the Sayers Croft centre in Ewhurst. In Form IV the children spend two nights at the Lodge Hill centre near Pulborough. Both venues are outdoor pursuits centres which have a wide range of activities from abseiling to sand karting.

In Form V the children spend a week at ‘Land and Wave’ in Dorset where they undertake a range of water-based sports such as coasteering and kayaking and also learn a host of bushcraft skills. In their final year the children spend a week in France where they visit the French battlefields and learn to apply the conversational French they have been learning in lessons.
