An amazing week of skiing took place at the IAPS Ski Championships in Passo del Tonale, Italy in March with an intrepid team of 10 Longacre pupils taking the slopes by storm. During the week the children trained extensively, perfecting their turns, picking up speed tips and adding racing technique to their skiing repertoire in preparation for the qualifying rounds and actual race competitions.
Split into two competitions (Championship and Plate) based on the qualifying run times, this group of resilient, enthusiastic and ever improving skiers proved repeatedly that small definitely can mean mighty. Competing against nearly 320 skiers from 28 schools, the Longacre pupils produced some wonderful runs in challenging and ever changing conditions, consistently bettering their times and gaining in confidence with each attempt.
They finished the week with an outstanding set of results and were delighted to be amongst the medals and top times in each race.
The final results were as follows:
Mattie B – 2nd in U11 Championship races
Will H – 1st (Gold medalist) in U9 Championship races
U9 Mixed team – 1st (Gold medalists) in U9 Plate competition
Dexter R – 1st U9 Boys Plate competition
Thomas S – 2nd fastest boy U9 Plate competition
Harry H – 4th fastest boy U9 Plate competition
Thomas W – 5th fastest boy U9 Plate competition
Amelia B – 3rd fastest girl U9 Plate competition
U11 Mixed team – 4th in U11 Plate Competition
As outstanding as these results are, and perhaps most importantly, these children were a credit to themselves, their parents and Longacre at all times. It was a pleasure to be part of such a wonderful experience and fabulous team.
